The Brukenthal Palace, home of the Museum, is one of the most important monuments built in Baroque architecture in Romania.

It was inaugurated in 1788, as the official residence for the Baron Samuel von Brukenthal, which was Governor of Transylvania between 1777 and 1787.

The front of the building still has the family coat-of-arms, and the interior contains many items that belonged to the Brukenthal family.
